John D. Atkinson can speak to media about air and water pollution, and about personal and corporate sustainability.
His lab develops and applies low-cost, sustainable materials for controlling air and water pollution and aqueous phase contaminants. Additionally, his research team works to measure industrial sustainability through life-cycle analysis — a technique that aims to capture the full environmental impact of products and operations, spanning their creation, use and disposal.
Locally, in Western New York, Atkinson has been active in a number of initiatives that promote sustainability. These have included leading a summer research program that engages students in air and water pollution prevention projects, and partnering with a waste-to-energy company to quantify greenhouse gas emissions and compare those metrics to emissions from alternative waste disposal options. In a , he described his educational efforts to improve personal sustainability.
